Spiritual Direction Philosophy:
I am a retired parish minister who began Spiritual Direction training at Loyola and moved over to Meadville because of Tandi Rogers. My MDiv was from Meadville as well. Earlier in life I was a social activist, waitress, file clerk, Vista volunteer and I was a massage therapist for fourteen years. My background in massage informs my work by reminding me that we are whole persons, body, mind, spirit, environment, community. I believe that Spiritual Direction or companioning helps you to find or realign yourself with your deep values, sources of strength, and springs of creativity. Spiritual Direction can be a path for discovering, retuning or refreshing spiritual practice in daily life; it can also help the seeker explore cognitive dissonances in religious life. Spiritual Direction ought to be less direction than guidance and companionship. The Director should seek to follow the lead of the seeker – even to help find the place where the world’s deep hunger and the seeker’s deep joy meet. Whether the seeker is a skeptic or a person of devout faith, Spiritual Direction can help the seeker tap into their deepest meanings, refresh their perspective on life, and reawaken their authentic sense of wonder, in alignment with their deep values, to meet the challenges of life. I have attended retreats with Thich Nhat Hanh and find mindfulness to be essential. I use art, music, poetry, as well as a lifetime of experience to evoke meaning and provide landmarks on the spiritual journey.
