I believe that all faith traditions carry the words of the Divine to humankind and that these words call us to a transcendent realm of existence. A place where all living things are connected. I believe that this is the place where love occurs, where healing is possible and forgiveness lives. And I believe that this transcendence is not the providence of holy men or mystics but exists for each of us to touch in the here and now.

Throughout millennia, individuals have come forward as gatekeepers and interpreters to this realm. Like the Roman god Janus, they can see both into this realm and back again to this world. These gatekeepers have familiar names, Buddha, Jesus, Lao Tzu, Muhammad, and the Dalai Lama. Through their many traditions and practices, they lead us to the place where deep knowing rests in the palm of our hand. In some small way, as a spiritual director, I too am a gatekeeper. If I merely hold open the door, light comes through for the seeker and for me.
